Bridge Over Troubled Water

35 Years this week -  A Bridge Over Troubled Water

At a Youth Fellowship Service in Merrylee Parish Church  Glasgow in the early 1980’s  - I had two first time experiences that have never left me and continued to bring me Joy.

 # 1 The great  privilege of sharing the Gospel with young children, it was there  delivered my first ever children talk   - "Road Signs we meet on our way  - what signs point us to God"    I still remember my grandparents’ pride   at seeing their grandson delivering the Gospel from the chancel steps of a church.

 # 2  Hearing  “Bridge over the Troubled Water”  for the very first time sung by the Youth Fellowship Choir. For me  it was a  spiritual moment  listening to my friends  belting out the words. It was one of these moments that you feel the gates of heaven open and you sense the  near presence of the Holy .   Each time I listen  to the Art Garfunkel’s pitch perfect intonation (I have listened to the song countless times) I feel my heart burning with love and  gratitude for Jesus .

. Paul Simon wrote  Bridge Over Troubles Water  about providing comfort to a person in need. It started as a modest gospel hymn but became more dramatic as he put it together. Speaking in the documentary The Making of Bridge Over Troubled Water, Simon said, "I have no idea where it came from. It came all of the sudden. It was one of the most shocking moments in my song writing career. I remember thinking, 'This is considerably better than I usually write." Art Garfunkel  the vocalist recorded over 200 takes and had to take a walk in Central Park to focus his mind before   he was satisfied with his voice being able to  honouring such a beautiful crafted lyric.  Bridge Over Troubled  was one of the few songs to top the US and UK charts at the same time. It was #1 in the US for six weeks, #1 in the UK for three and is my personal all time favourite song.

The words have remained with me as i have faced the ups and downs of life we all encouter, speaking  in my ears of Jesus and his Love ( although never mentioned in the song ) for nearly four decades .   The apostle paul spoke of Jesus companionship in life saying  :

Romans 8:38-39 "For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."

When you're weary, feeling small
When tears are in your eyes
I will dry them all
I'm on your side
Oh when times get rough
And friends just can't be found

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

When you're down and out
When you're on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you
I'll take your part
Oh when darkness comes
And pain is all around

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

Sail on, silver girl
Sail on by
Your time has come to shine
All your dreams are on their way
See how they shine
Oh if you need a friend
I'm sailing right behind

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
